Zeroing Your Sight
A zero is just an agreement between your barrel and your optic about where the bullet crosses your line of sight. Here's how to set it deliberately instead of chasing holes around a target.

Pick your zero distance on purpose

The process
Before you start: eye and hearing protection on, and verify the firearm is unloaded before handling it at the bench.
- Mount it right first. Proper torque on rings/mount (a torque wrench pays for itself), level reticle, correct eye relief. A loose mount cannot be zeroed.
- Start close. First shots at 10–25 yards just to get on paper. On a verified-unloaded firearm, bore-sighting (or a laser bore sight) saves ammo here.
- Shoot groups, not shots. 3–5 rounds, slow, from the rest. Adjust to the center of the group — one shot tells you nothing.
- Do the math. Group is 2" low and 1" right at 50 yards with a ¼-MOA optic? At 50yd each click moves impact ~⅛" — that's 16 clicks up, 8 left. The grid target and click value turn zeroing into arithmetic.
- Move to your real zero distance and repeat until the group centers on point of aim.
- Confirm. Fresh target, fresh group, no adjustments. That's your zero — log it (ammo, distance, date).
Chasing your tail? Groups that wander between strings usually mean a mounting problem, not a shooter problem — recheck torque before you burn another box of ammo. And re-confirm zero any time the optic comes off, the gun takes a hard knock, or you change ammunition.
